NEWCASTLE UNITED finally banished those lingering thoughts of relegation with a magnificent display at White Hart Lane today to destroy Juande Ramos' Spurs 4-1.
It was United's first away win of 2008 and first under Kevin Keegan, but it was a thoroughly deserved victory for the resurgent Toon over the Carling Cup winners.
United could have been a goal up after 5 mins, when ex-Mag Jonathan Woodgate handed the ball to Habib Beye on the edge of the box. "Sunday Monday" smashed the ball off the underside of the crossbar and unfortunately for the Magpies, the loose ball deflected clear and Spurs cleared. Spurs, however, wethered the early storm and began to push forward themselves - Robbie Keane missing from only yards out shortly after - and it was Spurs who drew first blood on 26 minutes, when Darren Bent registered his second goal in two games for Spurs, looping a cracking header past Steve Harper from a Steed Malbranque cross.
Allardyce's United would have buckled, but the recent confidence resurgence of Newcastle showed its face again, as United pushed for an equaliser. They were rewarded on the stroke of half time when Nicky Butt's scuffed effort found its way past the static Paul Robinson and into the Spurs net.
The goal galvanised Newcastle, and they shot out of the blocks in the second half, Joey Barton clipped the outside of the post with a 20 yard effort before Geremi sneaked a free kick past a shocking Spurs wall and a once-again-static Paul Robinson. The former England keeper has to take the blame for an atrocious wall which was nowhere near Geremi's side footed strike.
United took great pride in piling forward after the second goal, and any thoughts of hanging on to what they had were pushed aside by Kevin Keegan, who was urging Oba Martins and Michael Owen to take on their sluggish counterparts.
A stunning move brought about the third goal, Martins passing inside to Mark Viduka, who's beautiful flick played in Michael Owen, and Owen finished perfectly to register his fifth goal in his last 8 games for the club.
The Mags then rubbed salt into the gaping Spurs wound with a well worked fourth, the impressive Joey Barton finding Oba Martins inside the Spurs half, who ran the hapless Michael Dawson ragged before side footing into the Spurs net.
It was a great day for the Magpies who now have won two on the bounce and picked up 7 points from 3 vital games to drag themselves up into 12th place. It was also the thumping victory which had been on the cards for a few weeks, a day when confidence returned to the boys in black and white and they showed their metal for the third time in three games.
Keegan will no doubt be delighted with a victory on a day when most predicted a point would be the most United could hope for, and finally the Geordies can look towards next week's home game against Reading looking for their third win on the bounce - the first time they will have achieved this all season. And with their relegation fears finally allayed, King Kev and Mike Ashley can look forward to the massive rebuilding job due in the Summer.
